Well, let's see. A good lesson in what happens to those who go against the Lord and those who choose to follow Him. There are so many kings coming in and out of the readings right now that it is so hard to keep them straight. We do learn a lot about Elijah. I hesitate to say that this a guy I like because I've said that about others and then they do something that totally turns me off to them. But, I do like the Elijah so far. He followed the commands of the Lord. The Lord told Elijah to go off and hide from King Ahab in the Kerith Ravine east of the Jordan. He was to drink from the brook and the ravens would bring him food every day. He met a widow and asked her for some food and drink. She said that she only had some flour and oil. With that she was going to make something for her son and herself to eat and then they would die. Elijah said the Lord would give her bottomless portions of flour and oil so they could eat. He went back to her home with her. The son of the woman became ill and died. She blamed Elijah for reminding her of her sins and killing her son. Elijah took the boy and cried out to the Lord to give life back to him. God granted this to the Elijah, the boy, and his mother.
It's really one of my favorite stories in the Bible. It reminds me that nothing is impossible with God. He knows our every need and will provide for us.
The Lord then tells Elijah to go and see King Ahab. He confronts all of the people saying that they need to choose between God and the false god, Baal. He tells them to make a sacrifice to Baal and call to him. The Baal followers did this and cried out to him, with no response. Elijah then built an altar of the Lord and called to the Lord to prove that He is the One true God. The Lord answered by sending fire down upon the altar. The prophets praised God and worshipped Him. Those who didn't, were taken away and slaughtered.
