Numbers 30-32

Chapter 30 - Vows...The Lord made many commands concerning vows.  This was a pretty cut and dry lesson.  If a person makes a vow to the Lord, he can not, under any circumstances, break his vow.  Simple enough.  Also, we learn that a woman still living in her father's house must also keep her vows, unless her father forbids it.  Same goes for a woman living with her husband. 
Chapter 31 - War...The Israelites go to war against the Midianites.  They come before Moses after they conquered the Midianites.  Moses was angry when they returned because they only killed the men.  So, they are instructed to return and kill all of the women, keeping only those that are virgins.  They also brought back the livestock to be divided up among those who fought in the battle. 
Chapter 32 - "The Transjordan Tribes"...I really enjoyed this chapter.  It's one of the few times that I can remember thus far in our readings, that there is a fair negotiation made between Moses and a couple of other tribes.  It's time for everyone to cross the Jordan to go to war.  The Reubenites and Gadites realize that "this side" of the Jordan would be a great place to call home.  They approach Moses and ask for the land to be given to them, his servants.  They do not want to cross the Jordan.  Moses lays a bit of a guilt trip asking why they should be able to stay while everyone else goes to war.  So, they make a proposal.  The Reubenites and Gadites say the strong, capable men will cross the Jordan and go to war as long as they are able to leave their families and livestock on "this side."  They vow to do this and Moses actually agreed, but said if they did not fulfill their promise, their sin would be found out.  They kept their promise, and "this side" of the Jordan became a very prosperous land.
