When Ezra found out that God's people had intermarried with pagan women while they were in exile he was very upset. (Like tear his clothes, pull out his hair upset.) He dropped to his knees and bowed his head to the ground. His head did not lift during prayer b/c he felt so unworthy b/c of what his people had done.
It was decided that those wives that were not followers of the Lord must leave. (Their children would be able to go with them.) It was a careful and time consuming process, but he and others investigated those relationships. Almost all of God's people prayerfully confessed their sins and accepted the outcome. There were a number of women and children that were sent away. These were foreign women whom did not worship God, but their own idols. -nic
