April 16 - 1 Kings 21-22

Here we are - at the end of 1 Kings already. It seems as though Ahab was being a bit of a pouty pants.  He had gone to Naboth and offered to buy his land to plant a vegetable garden.  He refused, saying that the Lord had forbidden him to give Ahab any of his father's land.  Ahab went home and sulked and refused to eat because he was so upset.  Ahab's wife came in and gave him a little pep talk, saying this isn't how the king of Israel should be acting.  He needed to buck up and get back out there.  In the meantime, she sent a letter (and signed Ahab's name) to the head people in Naboth's city instructing them to stone him to death.  Done.  Once Ahab heard about this, his wife told him to head on over and take possession of Naboth's land.  The Lord then spoke to Elijah and told him to go to Ahab tell him about how he will be punished.  Because Ahab didn't know about his wife's actions in all of this, he was shocked.  He tore his clothes, put on a sackcloth, and fasted.  The Lord then saw how Ahab humbled himself, so He decided not to bring disaster upon him, but hold off and bring disaster among his sons. 
I still don't quite get this.  Ahab really didn't do anything wrong in this case.  It was more his wife's fault, yet, the Lord is going to punish his sons sometime down the line.  I know there is a good explantion for it all, but I may just have to do some more research on this one.  I do admire how humbled Ahab was when he was told that he had something to do with the death of Naboth.  What a shock to him!
Now it's time for another war.  Ahab, king of Israel, and Jehoshaphat, king of Judah, went up to Ramoth Gilead to fight.  Ahab said that he would go into battle in a disquise and everyone else was to wear their royal robe.  This way the Arameans would think Jehoshaphat was the king of Israel.  When they started to pursue him and realized he was not the king, they stopped.  But, someone randomly shot an arrow and struck Ahab, leading to his death.  Jehoshaphat continued to reign as the king of Judah for 25 years and he pleased God in all that he did until his death.  After Ahab died, his son Ahaziah, became king.  He did only evil things in the eyes of the Lord. 
And this ends 1 Kings.  It's kind of confusing and random stuff.  Basically, lots of Kings and fighting going on.  Let's just see how many more kings we meet in 2 Kings!
