Mar. 24 - 1 Samuel 13-14

War. War. War.
Saul is still reigning over the Israelites and there is a whole lot of fightin' going on.  The Israelites were fighting the Philistines and started getting very nervous about the fight and started hiding.  Saul waited the seven days he was told to wait by Samuel, but when Samuel wasn't there at the promised time, Saul took it upon himself to offer up the burnt offering.  Soon after, Samuel showed up and wasn't too happy with Saul.  He explained that the Lord had chosen him to be the leader of Israel, but now his kingdom wouldn't endure because he didn't follow God's commands. 
Saul continues his leadership and during that time, his son Jonathan thought it would be fun to go out and attack the Philistines again.  When the Israelites realized that there was fighting going on, they looked among their people to see who was missing.  When they found out it was Jonathan, Saul wasn't too proud.  To add salt to the wound, Saul had commanded that no one eat anything on a particular day until he had avenged himself on the enemy, but Jonathan went ahead and tasted some honey.  He didn't know that Saul had commanded this, but pretty much turned on his dad saying he had brought a lot of trouble to this country.  All the men went with Jonathan and slaughtered their livedstock and feasted on the meat.  When Saul heard of this he made sure they were aware of their sins. 
Saul believed that his son, Jonathan, should die because of the sin that he had committed.  The Israelites disagreed and said that Jonathan should be spared because he brought this great deliverance in Israel.  Saul headed up some more war throughout his years and he just seemed to get a pretty big head through all of it. 
I didn't quite understand what "great deliverance" Jonathan brought to Israel.  I think he pretty much sold out his dad, but Saul wasn't too great of a guy either.  Lots of family drama.  It will be interesting to see where all this goes!
