My first thought is: Why does he need the people to give HIM things.....He is GOD!
But my answer to that is: God wants us to have a giving heart. He doesn't demand it, he asks for it. He wants us to have a willing heart. As the first verse says, "Tell the Israelites to bring me an offering from each man whose heart prompts him to give". After all, he gave us his Son.
How willing is your heart? How willing is mine?
With your money?
With your time?
With your possessions?
Not giving out of obligation, but b/c you have a willing heart?
With these items that were offered God gives a purpose. The next few chapters lay out the foundation of what they are to be used for. It may have seemed like unnecessary reading, but it's the foundation of what I assume is going to become an important meeting place. This is a place for Man to come before God. This place is to represent what is most high. It should be fit for a King! (And by the way it sounds, it's going to be MAGNIFICENT!)
